Belinda Dillon
We’ve asked a few local theatre (and non-theatre) peeps to tell us what shows they’re absolutely dying to see at the Plymouth Fringe.
First up, we’ve got Belinda Dillon, Arts Editor at Manor Magazine and Theatre and Performance reviewer for Exeunt.
Infinity Pool | Bea Roberts
Monday 25th May | 6pm, Tuesday 26th May | 8pm
The Lab – Theatre Royal Plymouth
Living an underwhelming life, disappointed in love, immersing herself in celebrity gossip for vicarious thrills, Emma Barnicott is drowning. In this witty multimedia re-imagining of Madame Bovary, award-winning Bristol theatremaker Bea Roberts narrates Emma’s low-fi life with wit, wisdom and wickedly funny observations – and all without speaking a word. A truly original remake.
Cuddles | Arch468
Monday 25th May | 8pm, Tuesday 26th May | 8pm
Barbican Theatre – Stage
I’m a sucker for vampire stories, so this debut from Joseph Wilde – which has already garnered multi-star reviews – is a must-see for me. It’s heading off to New York after this, so catch it before it goes stratospheric.
Night.dream.sleep | AMINAL
Monday 25th May | 10pm, 11pm & 12pm, Tuesday 26th May | 10pm, 11pm & 12am, Wednesday 27th May | 10pm, 11pm & 12am, Thursday 28th May | 10pm, 11pm & 12am, Friday 29th May | 10pm, 11pm & 12am
Outdoor Performance
A unique walking performance that explores love, longing and loneliness through night-time perambulations. Intimate and moving, it grabs you by the hand and asks you to give yourself over to the romance of the city in darkness.
Score | Documental Theatre
Wednesday 27th May | 4pm, Thursday 28th May | 6pm
The Lab – Theatre Royal Plymouth
Drug addiction, prison, parenthood… Score isn’t afraid to face the darker aspects of life, love and friendship, and it does so with humour, warmth and honesty, and some cracking vocal performances from its leads.
Homeward Bound | Ruth Mitchell
Thursday 28th May | 6:30pm, Saturday 30th May | 4:00pm
Barbican Theatre – Stage
There’s autobiographical performance, and then there’s autobiographical performance by Ruth Mitchell, who weaves personal narratives about family, hopes and dreams with such skill that you’ll want to sit and listen to her stories all night. I’m also hoping to learn a bit about baseball. It’s a bit like rounders, yes?
