South West Comedy Showcase
August 3 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
South West Comedy Showcase
Produced by Louisa Pennell
The South West Comedy Showcase is being launched for the first time at the Plymouth Fringe Festival 2020!
In this showcase, you can expect to see a range of high-quality South West based comics, from those who are well-established on the circuit to those who have only had a handful of gigs.
The aim of this showcase is to celebrate the amount of comedy talent and availability of new material/open mic nights in Plymouth and the rest of the South West.
The South West Comedy Showcase will inspire people who have never considered performing comedy before into trying it for the first time, right here in the South West.
Running Time: 40 mins
This show is part of Plymouth Fringe Online 2020 and will be streamed via YouTube. To watch the performance, head to https://youtube.com/watch?v=PGKjHdADHTE
The South West Comedy Showcase will feature:
David Arnold (Host)
David Arnold is the host of the South-West Comedy Showcase this year. He is Welsh but has been based in Plymouth for a long time now. He has been performing on the ‘alternative’ circuit for over 8 years and has performed all over the UK for some of the country’s biggest promoters. He has shared the stage with many of today’s crop of TV talent, performed at some major UK festivals and has won critical acclaim in competitions such as So You Think You’re Funny and The South Coast Comedian of the Year.
He is a strong addition to the South-West Comedy Showcase line-up, and he is instrumental in holding the showcase together. You can find him on Facebook by searching @welshdavecomedy.
Suzy Bennett (Headliner)
Suzy Bennett is our headliner for the South-West Comedy Showcase.
She is a proud Devonian and was thrilled to be included in the Evening Herald’s ‘Coolest Plymouth Women’ List and ‘50 Coolest Plymouth People’ in 2020. She ‘accidentally’ won the Funny Women Awards on her 6th gig ( her first gig was in the final of ‘Jimmy Carr’s Comedy Idol) and has since been impressing audiences around the country and overseas with her warm, chatty style and hilarious stories.
She is an incredibly strong headliner, and you can find her on Instagram @suzybcomedy.
Christian Russell-Pollock (Opening Act)
Christian Russell-Pollock is our opening act for the South-West Comedy Showcase. Originally from Kent, he is now based in Plymouth. He has performed stand-up comedy since 2016, and he has won a few comedy awards in the process (e.g. the Ha-Hart Comedy Awards in 2019). He also MC’s comedy nights in the South-West, with one based in Plymouth at the Bread and Roses.
He is a strong MC and comic, which makes him a very capable comic to open the South-West Comedy Showcase with. He has his own website (https://www.crpcomedy.com/about) and he can also be found on Facebook.
Lydia is twenty-five years old and is based in Teignmouth. She completed a comedy course last year at the Barnfield in Exeter called the “ABCs of stand-up comedy” with Chris Brooks. She did her first five-minute set at the end of the course at the Barnfield Comedy Night in Exeter.
She has also performed in Plymouth and in Bristol, and she has done 5/6 gigs, which makes her a good fit for this Showcase for new acts in the South-West.
Kayleigh has recently graduated from the Acting degree programme at Plymouth Marjon University. She has had three or four proper stand-up gigs, and a handful of open mics.
The clip shown in the South-West Comedy Showcase is from her first-ever stand-up comedy performance, which was from the end of 2018. If you want to follow her on Instagram, you can find her @kayleighellen17.
Tom is from Portreath in Cornwall. He has been performing comedy for around a year and a half, and during that time he has clocked up around one hundred gigs. The clip we have chosen to show in the South-West Comedy Showcase focuses on the story behind St Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall, which definitely makes him a good fit for this comedy showcase.
He can be found on Instagram @tomedyrodgers.
Alice is currently based in Cornwall. She has had roughly twenty gigs so far, and she has also run her own comedy night called ‘Little Alice’s Comedy Show’, which focuses on fostering talent from the South-West. She first launched this night in Chepstow, and she will be bringing it to Cornwall when live comedy is permitted yet again.
You can find more information on her nights on Facebook and YouTube by searching “Little Alice’s Comedy Show”.
